U.S. electricity consumers are willing to pay 5% more for “cleaner” sources of energy that do less harm to the environment, according to a survey by Deloitte & Touche USA.

Of the 1,016 people surveyed by telephone last month, 54% said they would support a government requirement that power suppliers get a portion of their electricity from renewable sources, even if it meant a 5% increase in power bills.

Sixty-two percent said they would pay 5% more for power from a zero-emission “clean coal” power plant.
