Re “Fire danger acute as ’03 lessons fade,” May 20
Although I understand that the locations of fires can’t be predicted, I wonder if some preventive water drops in especially fire-prone areas might reduce the risk. Wetting down areas inaccessible to ground crews certainly would reduce the danger to firefighters on the ground; planes and helicopters would be in less danger flying in areas that are not already burning, and any damage to life and property that can be prevented would be worth the cost.
Do insurance companies share the financial burden of firefighting? If so, they would probably come out way ahead if they help fund prevention.

Tell me again why Los Angeles County does not own at least one SuperScooper airplane? Every year we go through the same nonsense of leasing them from Quebec, but the lease doesn’t start until several months after our fire season starts.
