The Carter controversy

Re “White House doesn’t turn the other cheek,” May 21

Regarding President Bush, former President Carter said: “I think as far as the adverse impact on the nation around the world, this administration has been the worst in history.” It is ironic that the man responsible for greasing the skids for the fall of the shah of Iran and ushering in the radical Islamic government we are having problems with today should call the Bush administration the worst in history. Lest we forget, Carter gave us double-digit inflation, double-digit interest rates, a hostage crisis that lasted 444 days, high unemployment and was a laughingstock around the world.

After enduring a quarter of a century of ridicule from partisan conservatives, Carter has every right to respond. That his harsh assessments of the current administration are true is irrelevant, as truth itself is now irrelevant in the Republican Party. What matters is that Carter has the right to criticize any Republican at any time for any reason.

One remembers the comment by Ronald Reagan in the 1980 presidential debate with Carter: “There you go again.”
