How to get in on the action
IF you enjoy the action extravaganzas of John Woo, you’ll be equally pleased by the work of fellow Hong Kong director Johnny To. (But if you like Woo, you probably already know that.)
For those who are interested in an introduction, two of To’s latest films -- last year’s “Triad Election” and its 2005 prequel, “Election” -- both slated to open at the NuWilshire on June 8, offer a strong sampler of his fluid filmmaking and ability to bring intense conviction to stories laced with graphic violence.
Treating the Triads, Hong Kong’s version of the Mafia, with realism and concern for character underlines To’s reputation as the great Asian gangster director who didn’t go Hollywood.
