Military deaths

The Defense Department last week identified the following American military personnel killed in Iraq:

Jesse B. Albrecht, 31, of Hager City, Wis.; sergeant first class, Army. Albrecht was among three paratroopers killed May 17 when a roadside bomb exploded near their Humvee in Iskandariya, south of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 725th Brigade Support Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division at Ft. Richardson, Alaska.

Joseph J. Anzack Jr., 20, of Torrance; private first class, Army. Anzack was among three soldiers captured May 12 in an ambush that killed four U.S. soldiers and an Iraqi interpreter near Mahmoudiya, south of Baghdad. His body was found Wednesday floating in the Euphrates River, 12 miles south of where his unit had been attacked with rocket-propelled grenades and small-arms fire. Anzack had been shot numerous times and appeared to have been dead for several days. He was assigned to the 4th Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division at Ft. Drum, N.Y.

Brian D. Ardron, 32, of Acworth, Ga.; sergeant, Army. Ardron was among three paratroopers killed Monday when several roadside bombs exploded near their vehicle in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 425th Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division at Ft. Richardson, Alaska.

Benjamin J. Ashley, 22, of Independence, Mo.; specialist, Army. Ashley was killed Thursday when a roadside bomb exploded near his vehicle in Balad, north of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 5th Field Artillery Regiment, 1st Brigade, 1st Infantry Division at Ft. Riley, Kan.

Ryan J. Baum, 27, of Aurora, Colo.; sergeant, Army. Baum was killed May 18 when his unit was attacked with small-arms fire in Karmah, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 509th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division at Ft. Richardson, Alaska.

David W. Behrle, 20, of Tipton, Iowa; specialist, Army. Behrle was among six soldiers killed May 19 when a roadside bomb exploded near their Bradley fighting vehicle in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division at Ft. Hood, Texas.

Scott J. Brown, 33, of Windsor, Colo.; sergeant first class, Army. Brown was one of two soldiers killed May 18 when their unit was attacked with an improvised explosive and small-arms fire in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 325th Airborne Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division at Ft. Bragg, N.C.

Steve Butcher Jr., 27, of Penfield, N.Y.; staff sergeant, Army. Butcher was one of two soldiers killed Wednesday when a bomb exploded near their unit while on foot patrol in Ramadi, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 69th Armor Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division at Ft. Stewart, Ga.

Daniel P. Cagle, 22, of Carson; private first class, Army. Cagle was one of two soldiers killed Wednesday when a bomb exploded near their unit while on foot patrol in Ramadi, west of Baghdad. He died of his injuries in Balad, north of the capital. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 69th Armor Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division at Ft. Stewart, Ga.

Ryan D. Collins, 20, of Vernon, Texas; corporal, Army. Collins died May 19 of injuries suffered a day earlier when his unit was attacked with small-arms fire in the Hamiyah neighborhood of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division at Ft. Richardson, Alaska.

Michael W. Davis, 22, of San Marcos, Texas; specialist, Army. Davis was among three paratroopers killed Monday when several roadside bombs exploded near their vehicle in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 425th Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division at Ft. Richardson, Alaska.

Robert H. Dembowski, 20, of Ivyland, Pa.; private first class, Army. Dembowski was killed Thursday when his unit was attacked with small-arms fire in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division at Ft. Bragg, N.C.

Benjamin D. Desilets, 21, of Elmwood, Ill.; lance corporal, Marine Corps. Desilets was one of two Marines killed in combat Tuesday in Al Anbar province, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 10th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Victor M. Fontanilla, 23, of Stockton; private first class, Army. Fontanilla was among three paratroopers killed May 17 when a roadside bomb exploded near their Humvee in Iskandariya, south of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 725th Brigade Support Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division at Ft. Richardson, Alaska.

Joseph A. Gilmore, 26, of Webster, Fla.; specialist, Army. Gilmore was among six soldiers killed May 19 when a roadside bomb exploded near their Bradley fighting vehicle in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division at Ft. Hood, Texas.

Travis F. Haslip, 20, of Ooltewah, Tenn.; private first class, Army. Haslip was among six soldiers killed May 19 when a roadside bomb exploded near their Bradley fighting vehicle in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division at Ft. Hood, Texas.

Kristopher A. Higdon, 25, of Odessa, Texas; staff sergeant, Army. Higdon was one of two soldiers killed Tuesday when a roadside bomb exploded near them in Taji, north of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 4th Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team) at Ft. Lewis, Wash.

David C. Kuehl, 27, of Wahpeton, N.D.; staff sergeant, Army. Kuehl was killed Tuesday when a roadside bomb exploded near him in Taji, north of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 4th Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team) at Ft. Lewis, Wash.

Anselmo Martinez III, 26, of Robstown, Texas; sergeant, Army. Martinez was among three soldiers killed May 18 when their armored vehicle struck a roadside bomb that exploded near Baqubah, northeast of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division at Ft. Hood, Texas.

Marquis J. McCants, 23, of San Antonio; specialist, Army. McCants was one of two soldiers killed May 18 when their unit was attacked with an improvised explosive and small-arms fire in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 325th Airborne Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division at Ft. Bragg, N.C.

Jean P. Medlin, 27, of Pelham, Ala.; sergeant, Army. Medlin was among six soldiers killed May 19 when a roadside bomb exploded near their Bradley fighting vehicle in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division at Ft. Hood, Texas.

Robert J. Montgomery Jr., 29, of Scottsburg, Ind.; sergeant, Army. Montgomery was killed Tuesday when a roadside bomb exploded near him in Al Jabour, south of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 40th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division at Ft. Richardson, Alaska.

Christopher Moore, 28, of Alpaugh, Calif.; staff sergeant, Army. Moore was among six soldiers killed May 19 when a roadside bomb exploded near their Bradley fighting vehicle in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division at Ft. Hood, Texas.

Casey W. Nash, 22, of Baltimore; specialist, Army. Nash was among three soldiers killed May 18 when their armored vehicle struck a roadside bomb that exploded near Baqubah, northeast of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division at Ft. Hood, Texas.

Coty J. Phelps, 20, of Kingman, Ariz.; specialist, Army. Phelps was among three paratroopers killed May 17 when a roadside bomb exploded near their Humvee in Iskandariya, south of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 725th Brigade Support Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division at Ft. Richardson, Alaska.

Joshua G. Romero, 19, of Crowley, Texas; specialist, Army. Romero was among three soldiers killed May 18 when their armored vehicle struck a roadside bomb that exploded near Baqubah, northeast of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division at Ft. Hood, Texas.

Oscar Sauceda Jr., 21, of Del Rio, Texas; private, Army. Sauceda was killed Tuesday when his unit was attacked with small-arms fire in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division at Ft. Riley, Kansas.

Jason A. Schumann, 23, of Hawley, Minn.; sergeant, Army. Schumann was killed May 19 when a roadside bomb exploded near his vehicle in Diwaniya, south of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 3rd Squadron, 89th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division at Ft. Polk, La.

Iosiwo Uruo, 27, of Agana Heights, Guam; sergeant, Army. Uruo was killed Thursday when his unit was attacked with small-arms fire in Buhriz, northeast of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 14th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team) at Ft. Lewis, Wash.

Alexander R. Varela, 19, of Fernley, Nev.; private first class, Army. Varela was among six soldiers killed May 19 when a roadside bomb exploded near their Bradley fighting vehicle in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division at Ft. Hood, Texas.

Shannon V. Weaver, 28, Urich, Mo.; staff sergeant, Army. Weaver was among three paratroopers killed Monday when several roadside bombs exploded near their vehicle in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 425th Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division at Ft. Richardson, Alaska.

Justin D. Wisniewski, 22, of Standish, Mich.; sergeant, Army. Wisniewski was killed May 19 when a land mine exploded near him near Mahmoudiya, south of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 15th Field Artillery Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division at Ft. Drum, N.Y.

Julian M. Woodall, 21, of Tallahassee, Fla.; corporal, Marine Corps. Woodall was one of two Marines killed in combat Tuesday in Al Anbar province, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 10th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Robert A. Worthington, 19, of Jackson, Ga.; private first class, Army. Worthington was one of two soldiers killed Tuesday when a roadside bomb exploded near them in Taji, north of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 4th Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team) at Ft. Lewis, Wash.

Casey P. Zylman, 22, of Coleman, Mich.; private first class, Army. Zylman died Friday in Mosul of injuries suffered a day earlier when a roadside bomb exploded near his vehicle in Tall Afar, northwest of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 3rd Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.
