COOL ‘N’ CASUAL

The bulky, black laptop bags of the past don’t cut it anymore for female road warriors. They want something that makes a fashion statement -- or at least reflects their tastes. The travel accessories industry has obliged: Each new season brings a broader selection of colors, shapes and styles. “Women’s bags -- many designed by women, for women -- resemble high-end fashion accessories,” says Michele Marini Pittenger, president of the Travel Goods Assn. “We’re seeing bright, playful tones, including pastels and polka dots, along with the more serious, businesslike colors.” Six female members of The Times staff teamed up to test some new models. Here’s what they thought.

First look: The soft-sided Yak Pak Kiku Laptop Bag is designed with fashionistas in mind. Its cotton-twill cover comes in more than 40 prints, including “black psychedelia” (shown). It offers decent padding and an outside pocket, big enough for files, with slots for CDs, an ID card and a cellphone or peripherals. Comes with handles and a detachable, adjustable shoulder strap.

Likes and yikes: The casual design is anything but workaday, which can be fun. The main compartment is oversized; its sturdy zipper is easy to work. And the price isn’t bad. But the shoulder strap could use padding, and the outside pocket, secured with a 3-inch-wide, hook-and-loop closure, could allow some items to slip out.
