The pitch: A complaint has been filed with the FTC against you.

The scam: This e-mail, which looks as if it came from the Federal Trade Commission, is especially scary because it mentions the recipient, by name, in the text. It says you can read the complaint against you if you click on the attachment.

The result: Opening the attachment could unleash a virus that could possibly steal passwords and even account numbers off your computer.

How to spot it: The e-mails appear to come from the address frauddep@ftc.gov. It’s a phony address and has no connection with the federal agency. If you get one of these e-mails, there is little risk in opening it. But don’t click on the attachment!
