Oft-traded Dickau ready for long run

Dan Dickau’s shoes don’t match -- he wears size 10 1/2 on his left foot and 9 1/2 on his right -- but he hopes he has finally found a fit with an NBA franchise.

The oft-traded point guard signed with the Clippers because he saw an opportunity to play, and he could become an integral component if Brevin Knight, who strained his right groin muscle against the Denver Nuggets on Wednesday, is out for long.

“He’s been really solid for us when he’s been a guy in the rotation,” Coach Mike Dunleavy said.

Dickau adds another three-point shooter to the team’s repertoire.

“That’s one of those things I have to look at, that I’ve been in this league for six years and I have to be able to stay ready,” he said.

The Clippers acquired Dickau during training camp after the New York Knicks bought out his contract. He averaged a career-best 13.2 points and 5.2 rebounds in 2004-05 with the New Orleans Hornets before rupturing his Achilles’ tendon with the Boston Celtics the next season.

Last season, the Portland Trail Blazers brushed him aside in a youth movement and the Knicks obtained him in a trade that also sent Zach Randolph to New York. Dickau has also played in Atlanta and Dallas.

“It can be frustrating, but at the same time you’ve got to look at it like, ‘Hey, you’re here in the NBA, you are here to do a job,’ ” Dickau said.

And Dickau has one of the more original off-court pursuits to keep his interest.

Dickau helped co-found TheChipLab.com, an online store that allows customers to design custom-made poker chips, placing whatever image they want on them.

“A friend of mine uses the poker chips as business cards,” he said. “He is giving something other than just a regular business card. At the same time, when we play cards at his house, we have to look at his ugly face the whole night. It gets a little old.”

Dickau’s love for poker developed during his college days at Gonzaga with his teammates.

“It’s a great way to pass the time with your friends,” he said. “You are able to spend time interacting rather than watching TV or playing video games.”

But back to the shoes. Believe it or not, it gets more complicated.

Nike orders them specially from China because his feet are wide. Each box is equipped with the different sizes.

“Some of the other shoes feel fine, but those ones just feel better,” Dickau said.
