In his comfort zone

GARY GIBSON wanted his new Beverly Boulevard showroom to be a homey yet edgy environment -- “approachable and engaging at the same time,” he says. Walk into the sunny space and the designer’s love of artful objects is immediately apparent. Original works are hung salon-style on 12-foot-tall walls. Contemporary furnishings by Gibson Studio (including the ottoman on Page 1) and striking hand-woven Larsen drapes are accented with found objects such as bundles of twine, maps, mirrors and rulers. Teak driftwood rests underneath Gibson’s tobacco-stained walnut coffee table; a worn football sits on a Roost antler next to a vintage lounge chair. While Van Morrison plays softly in the background, Gibson enthusiastically points out shimmering art glass by Esque, Jefrey Jones’ delicate sculptural wire lights and soy candles from Eagle Rock-based Soybeam. “The key to collecting is to stay in your comfort zone,” Gibson says. “Don’t be a slave to a particular style.” 7350 Beverly Blvd., L.A.; (323) 934-4248; www.garygibson.com.
