Louisiana State takes over No. 1

Louisiana State moved just ahead of USC in the Associated Press top 25 on Sunday, even though the Trojans remained undefeated.

USC avoided an upset but its 27-24 win at Washington on Saturday night cost it the No. 1 ranking it had held all season.

Louisiana State received 33 first-place votes from the media panel and 1,593 points. USC got 32 first-place votes and 1,591 points. The Tigers are No. 1 in the AP poll for the first time since Nov. 2, 1959.

In the USA Today coaches’ poll and the Harris rankings, USC held on to No. 1, with Louisiana State right behind.

Mississippi State quarterback Josh Riddell tore a knee ligament in the team’s loss to South Carolina and is out for the rest of the season.
