A suspended bus company manager sparked a fierce blaze on a bus in southwest China that killed him, his wife and 25 others, and injured the remaining 11 people on board, the official New China News Agency said.

The bus was heading downtown in Chongqing on Tuesday when the fire erupted.

The flames apparently started in big bags held by Xiao Yonghua, a 50-year-old employee of the firm that owned the bus, and his wife, 38, the report quoted bus driver Chen Jun as saying.

The pair, who died in the blaze, were sitting at the front of the bus, so the flames blocked the exit. Commuter Zhang Da- zhong said he had to jump out the window.
