Wisdom on wallets

Share

The first time I went to Europe, my wallet was stolen from my zipped-up purse on the Paris Métro. I have no idea how the thief did it. The next time I ventured onto the Continent, I stashed my passport, credit cards, currency and more in a thin nylon wallet, tucked under my clothing and secured to a waistband. That did the trick. But reaching into my pants to access these items turned heads -- and not in a good way. Modern travelers can chose among many specialized wallets. Now, as then, each is a compromise.

THIN DISGUISE

First look: Magellan’s Secret Security Wallets, with zippered and meshed compartments, are nearly wafer-thin and made of light tan polyester. They are designed to be worn under clothing. Depending on the model, they hang from your neck or attach to a cinched waistband (provided) or your belt.

Likes and yikes: Discreet yet roomy enough to hold a passport, travel tickets and travelers checks. Breathable, antimicrobial fabric counters perspiration. Access is awkward with waist models, somewhat easier with the pouch. No style, but who cares? No one will see them -- you hope.

HEY, GOOD LOOKIN’

First look: The Amphipod Micropack Explorer clips to your pants’ waistband, with most of it hidden inside. It’s made of brushed black nylon and contains compartments for currency, coins and other valuables; slots for two cards; and an outside flap where you can hang sunglasses.

Likes and yikes: Roomy enough for a passport. Sturdy, stylish design. Easy, topside access. A bit bulky. Noisy, hook-and-loop closures announce, “Hey, everybody! I’m opening my wallet.” Not a message you may want to deliver to strangers.

The 411: $22; (800) 806-1288, www.amphipod.com.

SMALL WONDER

First look: A panel of rubberlike fabric helps keep the DayMaker Wallet from slipping out of your pocket. At 5 by 3 3/4 inches, it’s small but packed with six compartments for credit cards, currency, coins and more.

Likes and yikes: No room for larger items, such as a passport. Good for daily essentials but not serious valuables, unless you put it in a purse; in an outside pocket, it’s accessible to thieves, like any wallet. Some men said they found the style too “girlie,” even in all black.

The 411: $14.85 (black or red microfiber), $19.85 (black leather); (805) 937-9160, www.daymakers.com. Also sold through www.magellans.com
