Middle class, Mr. Nunez? That’s rich

Re “Campaign cash gives Nunez rich travel style,” Oct. 5

Fabian Nunez (D-Los Angeles), the speaker of the California Assembly, has an interesting perspective on the middle-class lifestyle. He travels the world in luxury, all at the expense of campaign contributors who have a vested interest in his well-being.

Upon revelations of his lavish expenditures on first-class hotels and restaurants in foreign lands, he has the audacity to claim that there’s little difference between his lifestyle and that of the middle class.

Putting aside the tens of thousands spent on travel, even his legislative salary of $130,000 per year, on top of the tax-free $170 daily expenses during legislative sessions, is not the average earning power of most middle-class families.

That our speaker is living in a fantasyland is certainly one explanation for why the current California Legislature is such a dysfunctional and ineffective institution.

Sadly, this guy is in a safe Democratic district that will keep him in office until he’s termed out.

Nunez spends his campaign money lavishly because he didn’t earn it. The politicians do the same thing with taxpayers’ money because that is somebody else’s money. No wonder we have mounting deficits at state and federal level.

The lavish spending is a habit creating burdening debt for future generations.
