Red Sox move up Schilling

Curt Schilling will pitch for the Boston Red Sox in the second game of the American League Championship Series against the Cleveland Indians, following Josh Beckett in the rotation and moving ahead of Daisuke Matsuzaka.

Beckett will start Friday’s series opener and Schilling will start Game 2 on Saturday. Matsuzaka would be in line for Game 3, followed by Tim Wakefield.

Detroit exercised a $13-million option on the contract of catcher Ivan Rodriguez, who batted .281 with 11 home runs and 63 runs batted in last season.

Philadelphia and Manager Charlie Manuel agreed to a two-year contract with a club option for 2010.

Manuel, 63, led the Phillies to an 89-73 record and their first National League East title since 1993. Philadelphia was swept by Colorado in a best-of-five division series.

The Chicago White Sox hired former Kansas City Royals manager Buddy Bell as the organization’s director of minor league instruction.

Bell, 56, announced in August he would step down as Royals manager to spend more time with his family.

In September, the Royals had announced Bell would become a senior advisor to General Manager Dayton Moore.

Toronto hired Gary Denbo as hitting coach. Denbo had been working for the New York Yankees as roving hitting coordinator. . . . Milwaukee fired third base coach Nick Leyva. . . . San Francisco fired hitting coach Joe Lefebvre and first base coach Willie Upshaw.
