A lockdown that prevented about 2,100 students at Palm Desert High School from leaving their classrooms Thursday morning was lifted after about two hours.

Officials said the school was shut down about 8:15 a.m. after they received a tip that a former student might be on campus with a weapon.

“We’re back in session, and there was no weapon and no nonstudent found on campus,” said Supt. Doris Wilson of the Desert Sands Unified School District.

A student called her family from school and said she saw a former classmate on campus with a weapon, and a family member called school officials, Wilson said.

Riverside County sheriff’s deputies and school security officers swept the campus in the 43000 block of Phyllis Jackson Lane.

Several juveniles were detained for questioning, said Sheriff’s Deputy Herlinda Valenzuela.

Wilson said she thought the students were being questioned because they weren’t in school but should have been.
