Stanford hasn’t won over bettors

Times Staff Writer

In less than a week, Stanford has gone from being the darlings of college football (thanks to an upset victory last Saturday over USC) to a six-point underdog to Texas Christian (which has lost its last three road games).

But that’s life in the world of odds as Stanford backup quarterback Tavita Pritchard tries to leads his team to two wins in a row as an underdog when the Cardinal (2-3) faces the Horned Frogs (3-3) today at Stanford.

Bettors seem to believe that the Cardinal’s victory over the Trojans was somewhat of a fluke. Stanford opened as a four-point underdog, but the line is now up to six.

At Wagerline.com, TCU had attracted 54.86% of the action (966-765) on bets made on the spread and 68% on Sportsbook.com’s consensus betting trend.

Why so much support for the Horned Frogs? TCU is 4-1 against the spread in its last five games against teams with a losing record, and Stanford is 0-8 against the spread in its last eight games as a home underdog.

But it’s a safe bet that last week’s Stanford supporters are not too concerned about those numbers.

A game to keep an eye on will be Baylor (3-3) at Kansas (5-0). According to Sportsbook.com’s betting trend, the Jayhawks had received 75% of wagers as of Thursday afternoon when the line had Kansas as a 24-point favorite.

But after the line was increased to 27 points, money headed in favor of the Bears, who had reached 45% support as of Friday night.

Kansas, which is 4-0 against the spread, is one of three unbeaten teams against the spread remaining.

Missouri (4-0) and Cincinnati (5-0) are the others.
