Rutgers stuns No. 2 South Florida

It’s not easy being No. 2 -- just ask South Florida.

The Bulls became the third second-ranked team to lose in the last three weeks, their unexpected unbeaten run ending Thursday night against Rutgers, 30-27, at Piscataway, N.J.

Third-string quarterback Andrew DePaola threw a 15-yard touchdown pass off a fake field goal to give the Scarlet Knights the lead in the third quarter and Rutgers also used a fake punt to set up a field goal in the first quarter.

Ray Rice provided a more conventional 181 yards in 39 carries for Rutgers (5-2, 2-1 in the Big East Conference) and Mike Teel threw two touchdown passes to Tiquan Underwood. An eight-game winning streak ended for the Bulls (6-1, 1-1).

Darrell Mack pounded his way for 100 yards rushing with a touchdown and Utah won its fourth consecutive game, defeating Texas Christian, 27-20, in a Mountain West Conference game at Fort Worth.

Mack has four consecutive 100-yard rushing games for the Utes (5-3, 2-2). TCU (4-4, 1-3), with three 11-win seasons the last four years, already has three losses to teams ahead of the Horned Frogs in the Mountain West standings.

Nebraska interim athletic director Tom Osborne responded to reports that Coach Bill Callahan said the former coach was “trying to run things from Washington” while he was a U.S. congressman.

Callahan allegedly called Osborne a “crusty old [expletive],” according to former Nebraska football trainer Doak Ostergard, who is quoted in a book to be self-published by a student at the University of Nebraska.

“I understand that head football coaches, like everyone else, have emotions,” Osborne said. “I’m not surprised that my long-term influence on the program could sometimes be felt as a controlling force even while I was away, but that was never the intent.”

Offensive line coach Eric Schnupp, the Baylor coach who was cited early Sunday for public urination and was suspended indefinitely by the university, resigned.
