Tribute plays like a comedy

Share

At Elle magazine’s Women in Hollywood tribute Oct. 15, Legend award recipient 1. Lauren Bacall, left, joked that she was surprised to be upright, as by her count, she’s got to be 192 years old. Bacall’s wisecracking garnered her two standing ovations and laughs from fellow honorees Kate Bosworth, Amy Adams, Julie Taymor and Diane Lane. Host 2. Wanda Sykes, right, with her “New Adventures of Old Christine” costar Julia Louis-Dreyfus, also knocked ‘em dead after telling cover girl Scarlett Johannson that “it was a toss-up between you and Britney!” for the Icon award. 3. Jennifer Beals, left, and Julie Delpy rounded out the mostly female crowd at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills, where a Balenciaga-clad 4. Jennifer Connelly flashed her statuette and pearly whites.

Love of art, fashion on exhibit at Hammer gala

With Miuccia Prada listed as an honoree at the Hammer Museum’s Gala in the Garden on Oct. 14, devotees 5. Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson coordinated in the designer’s not-so-basic-black duds, which were also spotted on presenter Cindy Sherman. The artist praised Prada’s support of the arts during her speech, while the ever-quirky 6. John Waters, left, with artist Mike Kelley, gave an equally heartfelt -- yet a tad more, um, colorful -- tribute to the L.A.-based honoree, whose work hangs in the director’s home. Lauren Hutton, Diane Keaton, k.d. lang and Chair Leonard Nimoy rounded out the crowd of art lovers, who dined on coq au vin in the museum’s courtyard and helped raise more than $1 million for the Hammer’s exhibitions and free public programs.

Keeping up presidential appearances

Former “Commander in Chief” Geena Davis stepped it up at Oxygen Mentors Walk on Oct. 5 in Santa Monica, while former Gerald Ford impersonator 7. Chevy Chase kept the pratfalls to a minimum at the Glamour Reel Moments on Oct. 9, where he kissed up to his first-time director, Kate Hudson. Now that “The West Wing” is but a distant memory, onetime TV president 8. Martin Sheen, left, is taking a stance on issues off-screen. He lent his support to Capt. Paul Watson, founder of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society at the charity’s fundraiser on Oct. 13.
