Deep green: Enough is enough

Share

“An ideal green celebrity lifestyle would see to avoid conspicuous consumption, elitism and activities detrimental to the environment made possible only by their wealth. It must be noted that 2 billion people live on one or two dollars a day, and that inequities in wealth are at an all-time high. Celebrities have worked hard and by all means deserve to live well, but a line is crossed when consumption levels are hundreds of times the world’s poor, and opulent lifestyles are only able to be supported by the Earth for a few.

“A celebrity environmentalist that truly understands and incorporates into their life the urgency of the global ecological crisis would demonstrate knowing when enough is enough and voluntary simplicity. Global ecological sustainability will require sacrifice, and this should be modeled by environmental leaders.

“By all means meet all basic needs, live well, enjoy luxuries in moderation; but lay off the private jets, limousines, multiple mansions that could never be universalized to the world’s population while not destroying the Earth.”
