Coca-Cola Co. redesigned its 20-ounce soda bottles to cut the amount of plastic by 5% after being criticized for using too much packaging.

The new contour bottles also have shorter caps that are easier to open and an embossed Coca-Cola logo similar to the ones on glass bottles, the Atlanta-based company said.

Coca-Cola, PepsiCo Inc. and makers of bottled water such as Nestle have been criticized by environmental groups for how much they contribute to landfills and for using too much energy to make plastic containers. Plastic bottles are made from polyethylene terephthalate, which is derived from petroleum.
