Main party backs ending monarchy

Nepal’s leading party announced its support for declaring the country a republic, moving the government a step closer to abolishing the monarchy.
Leaders of the Nepali Congress party passed a resolution calling for a special assembly, expected to be elected in November, to order the world’s last Hindu king to give up his throne, a key demand of former communist rebels who withdrew from the coalition a week ago, said the party’s acting president.
