Readers remember an icon of film

Here’s what readers had to say about Charlton Heston, Oscar-winning actor and unapologetic gun advocate, who died Saturday at 84:

Another Hollywood great departs this world. I have always enjoyed his performances and especially his portrayal of Moses in “The Ten Commandments.” God bless and comfort his family in their sorrow.

I did not agree with him politically, but he was a good mix of brass and class. This guy will never be replaced. Thanks for all your movies. God bless.

Right up there with John Wayne.

We have lost a great human being. There are not many people like Mr. Heston, and it is a shame. Yes, I disagreed with his stance on guns, so what? He had the courage of his convictions, he loved his family and he loved acting.

Charlton Heston was a maniac who couldn’t understand that without guns, there wouldn’t be gun related crimes. If criminals are getting guns illegally, which they are, then all guns should be illegal, that way there is no question as to who is and isn’t a criminal.

You fools who think gun ownership is wrong should find yourselves alone late at night with a burglar in your home. Be sure to offer him some organic tea and cookies, and ask about his low self-esteem.

Guess we can pry the gun out of his hands now.

Thank you Mr. Heston for all the joy you have brought me and my family during your great career. Also thank you for showing us how to stand up for what you believe in no matter what the critics say. I feel its a lesson lost to an entire generation. May God bless you and your family.

His rep as a gun nut will fade long before his movies.

I am a lifelong and committed liberal myself; I regret he did not see what I see, but reviling someone for their sincere beliefs, as long as they are not aimed at doing violence to other people or their rights, is unbecoming of any American, liberal or conservative. Here’s to, as far as I can judge, a sincere soul, a good and memorable actor . . . , and a fellow human being.

We will never see another cinematic giant like Charlton Heston. He is one of the last of a disappearing breed . . . a true Hollywood icon. The ‘60s deconstructed the old Hollywood star system. . . . We still have the angst of a DeNiro, the rage of a Pacino, but we don’t have any towering Hollywood icons any more. It marks a sad passing of the man and the old Hollywood.
