Self agrees to stay as coach of Kansas

Kansas Coach Bill Self said no thanks to Oklahoma State, his alma mater, and agreed to a contract extension that could keep him at Kansas for the rest of his career.

The 45-year-old Self, an Oklahoma native who played for the Cowboys and was an assistant coach there at the beginning of his career, met with Oklahoma State Athletic Director Mike Holder on Wednesday night for about two hours.

After conferring with Kansas Athletic Director Lew Perkins on Thursday, Self announced he was staying.

New California Coach Mike Montgomery has no plans for an about-face to return to Stanford. The job at Stanford, where Montgomery spent 18 years as coach, came open when Trent Johnson left for Louisiana State.

Sharapova wins clay marathon

Maria Sharapova outlasted clay-court veteran Anabel Medina Garrigues in more than 3 1/2 hours at the Bausch & Lomb Championships at Amelia Island, Fla.

Sharapova rallied from 3-0 down in the third set and survived, 7-6 (3), 5-7, 7-6 (1), to move into the quarterfinals.

Top-ranked Justine Henin pulled out of next week’s Family Circle Cup in Charleston, S.C., because of a knee problem.

Tennis Channel is selling the rights to its Las Vegas tournament to the ATP, which could take the event out of the city.

Jones’ teammates lose Olympic medals

Marion Jones’ Olympic relay teammates lost their medals from the 2000 Sydney Games because of Jones’ steroid use.

The International Olympic Committee stripped teammates who won gold with Jones in the 1,600-meter relay and bronze in the 400 relay.

Jones’ teammates on the 1,600 squad were Jearl-Miles Clark, Monique Hennagan, LaTasha Colander-Richardson and Andrea Anderson. The 400 relay squad also had Chryste Gaines, Torri Edwards, Nanceen Perry and Passion Richardson.

Football Coach Joe Paterno, 81, doesn’t need a new contract to keep his job at Penn State.

Paterno’s current contract is up at the end of the 2008 season, yet that doesn’t necessarily mean the end of his record-setting tenure leading the Nittany Lions, university President Graham Spanier told the Associated Press in an e-mail.
