* at Kansas City 5, Minnesota 1: Brian Bannister (3-0) threw his second career complete game and outpitched Francisco Liriano, who was making his first start since undergoing Tommy John elbow surgery 17 months ago. Liriano gave up six hits, walked five and struck out four in 4 2/3 innings. He threw 90 pitches, 51 for strikes.

* at Boston 8, New York 5: Daisuke Matsuzaka (3-0) issued six walks in five innings but the Red Sox never trailed after scoring three runs in the first inning and four in the third when Phil Hughes (0-2) left with no outs.

* at Cleveland 7, Oakland 1: Cliff Lee (2-0) struck out eight and limited the A’s to one run and two hits over eight innings. Grady Sizemore and Dave Dellucci had two-run doubles and Travis Hafner hit a two-run single.

* at Tampa Bay 6, Baltimore 2: Jeff Niemann allowed one run over six innings in his major league debut and B.J. Upton hit a three-run homer during a six-run fifth inning for the Rays. Niemann gave up six hits.

* Toronto 5, at Texas 4 (10): Joe Inglett drove in the tiebreaking run with a sacrifice fly in the 10th inning, B.J. Ryan earned his first save in more than a year and the Blue Jays completed a three-game sweep.

* at Chicago 11, Detroit 0: Joe Crede and Paul Konerko each hit grand slams and Javier Vazquez (2-1) won his second straight start by scattering five hits in seven innings while striking out nine without a walk.

* Angels 10, at Seattle 5: Eric Bedard (hip) was scratched before the Angels unleashed their 16-hit attack.
