at Tampa Bay 5, Detroit 2: The Rays’ bullpen limited the Tigers to one hit over the final 4 1/3 innings. Grant Balfour struck out three of the four batters he faced in relief of Scott Kazmir to get the victory.
at Texas 9, Toronto 8: David Murphy’s two-run single with one out in the bottom of the ninth capped a three-run rally. Jarrod Saltalamacchia drew a one-out walk from B.J. Ryan, and Michael Young followed with single. Brandon Boggs then doubled to score Saltalamacchia. Ryan intentionally walked Marlon Byrd to load the bases for Murphy.
at Minnesota 4, Cleveland 1: Joe Mauer’s two-run homer in the seventh inning spoiled a strong start by Jeremy Sowers. Mauer’s homer broke a 1-1 tie. Sowers took a perfect game into the sixth inning.
Chicago 4, at Kansas City 2: Ken Griffey Jr. drove in two runs in his debut with the White Sox and Javier Vazquez won for the first time in seven starts.
Baltimore 10, at Seattle 5: Garrett Olson threw eight scoreless innings before running into trouble. He was working on an eight-hitter before the Mariners chased him during a five-run ninth.
at Boston 2, Oakland 1 (12 innings): Jason Bay tripled and scored the winning run in the 12th.
Angels 1, at New York 0: Torii Hunter’s run-scoring single in the ninth inning off Mariano Rivera gave the Angels a 12-2 record since the All-Star break.
