Near the dawn of Monkees music

I ENJOYED your recent article on the Monkees [“Hey, Hey, Hear the Fun, Kids” by Mike Boehm, July 27]. A lot of people don’t give the Monkees their due. Most every article seems to start with “At first the Monkees had no input into the creation of their music.”

But what’s now known is that the first recording session of Monkees music, where the music was used on the show or albums, was done on June 25, 1966. This took place at the RCA studios at 6363 Sunset Blvd. Behind the producer’s desk was Monkee Michael Nesmith, who also wrote two of the three songs recorded this day. The first session produced by Don Kirshner-picked producers Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart did not occur until days later, on July 5.
