A weaker Guard

Re “National Guard suffers defeat in budget fight,” Aug. 20

Californians once again had an opportunity to enhance their security and contribute to an economically stronger future. However, as in previous attempts, the Legislature failed to approve an educational assistance program for members of the National Guard. California is the only state that does not provide this incentive.

The guardsmen of today face intellectual challenges never before imagined. The complexity of modern military operations demand extraordinary capability. Education is the foundation in achieving this level of competence.

It is disquieting when legislators use benefits to those serving in uniform for personal political expression related to matters of their choosing. The interests of the people of California suffer the result.
