No different from the others

Re “Bush’s big ‘regret,’ ” editorial, Dec. 4

How naive to expect President Bush to admit that the invasion of Iraq was unnecessary. After all, former White House occupants haven’t set a precedent for expressing regret for their mistakes, let alone apologizing for them.

Richard Nixon went to his grave without acknowledging his participation in Watergate or the subsequent cover-up. The closest Ronald Reagan came to taking responsibility for Iran-Contra was to profess to having a poor memory, but only after the facts were undeniable. Bill Clinton had no choice but to admit that he lied to the American people and to his family when he claimed he didn’t have sex with “that woman.”

There seems to be an unwritten law that presidents don’t admit their mistakes. At least in that regard, Bush is no different from most of his predecessors.
