Tarnished gold

The most disappointing aspect of the Oscar De La Hoya-Manny Pacquiao fight was not the thorough beating that Pacquiao administered to De La Hoya’s face. As difficult as that was to watch, a champion being sent into retirement so effortlessly, it had nothing on seeing De La Hoya break the cardinal rule of boxing -- he quit on his stool. A champion goes out like a champion -- fighting and flailing and gutting it out with everything he has left.

Line up the best of the best and Oscar would lace them up and see what happened. One never imagined a fighter with so much courage and heart would choose to throw in the towel while sitting in his corner. A “no mas” moment for one of the sport’s best.

That wasn’t De La Hoya you saw in the ring last Saturday night. It was his statue.
