State Controller John Chiang remained in a Texas hospital Tuesday after experiencing chest pains while visiting family for the holidays last week.

Chiang was expected to remain under observation at Harris Methodist Hospital Southwest in Fort Worth for a few more days, said his spokeswoman, Hallye Jordan.

The 46-year-old controller checked himself into the hospital on Friday with chest pains. Jordan said that the hospital is running tests but that she was not aware of a diagnosis.

“The only update we have at this point is he is being kept in the hospital for observation,” Jordan wrote in an e-mail. “He feels fine, has been on the phone with us all day . . . and we hope to know when they’ll release him tomorrow.”

A message left Tuesday at the hospital for Chiang wasn’t returned. A man who answered the hospital’s phone said Chiang was in good condition.

He said he was given a bed in the hospital’s intensive care unit but was there only because the unit was being used as “overflow.”

The Democrat serves as California’s chief fiscal watchdog. He sent a letter Tuesday to state agencies warning them his office would begin issuing IOUs as early as February unless lawmakers address the state’s budget deficit.
