Army battles rebel advance
From Times Wire Reports
The army fought rebels who pushed to within 60 miles of the capital, N’Djamena, in clashes that delayed the deployment of European peacekeepers.
The interior minister said Sudan-backed rebels had been defeated and put to flight. But the insurgents said they were still advancing after destroying dozens of army vehicles.
Up to 3,700 European Union troops were to arrive soon to protect civilians and aid workers from violence in Sudan’s neighboring Darfur region.
