Forget the blender, hold the toaster oven. A more useful wedding gift for some couples is help with a down payment on a home.

Enter Feather Our Nest, www.featherournest.com, an online mortgage wedding registry that allows couples to register to receive money that can be applied to a down payment.

Carol Peterson, founder of the online honeymoon registry TravelBride.com, created the new website.

“Younger couples often can make the monthly payments,” Peterson said, “but don’t have cash for the down payments. . . . They can use help with that more than an extra appliance.”

To register, the bride and groom fill out a Web form and pay a $300 fee. The agency provides the couple with wedding registry cards they can distribute to family and friends; the cards provide instructions about how to contribute to the down-payment fund. Contributors receive gift cards that may be presented to the newlyweds.

The registry fee is refundable at the close of escrow if the couple completes a transaction with an agent referred by Feather Our Nest. Couples are free to use any agent they want, however. In that case, the fee is nonrefundable.
