Pepperdine has Asbury on short list

Tom Asbury, who guided Pepperdine to three NCAA tournament appearances in the early 1990s, is on the short list for the Waves’ coaching job as he considers whether to come out of retirement, Pepperdine Athletic Director John Watson said Sunday.

“He’s still analyzing whether it’s something he wishes to do,” said Watson, adding that he hopes to select a coach this week.

Watson declined to identify other candidates to replace Vance Walberg, who resigned last month, except to say interim Coach Eric Bridgeland is still being considered. USC assistant Gib Arnold also had been expected to be a candidate.

Asbury, 62, had a record of 125-59 at Pepperdine from 1988 to 1994 and also worked as an assistant under Jim Harrick at the school. He left to become coach at Kansas State and most recently had worked as an assistant at Alabama before retiring to Tucson last year.
