Rules are sought on sex offenders

Share

Responding to complaints from residents who live near an apartment complex housing a dozen sex offenders, the City Council on Tuesday directed the city attorney to draft a law that would restrict where sex offenders can live.

The council also asked for a study on whether the city could limit the number of offenders that can live in a multifamily building.

The action was sparked by reports that at least 12 registered sex offenders lived in an apartment complex at 1149 E. 1st Street.

City Councilwoman Suja Lowenthal said the issue underscores a deeper problem in which landlords are buying properties for the purpose of housing multiple offenders because case officers prefer to place them together to more conveniently monitor them.
