Rider is able to hold off Northridge

Harris Mansell scored 21 points and Ryan Thompson had 16, including a free throw in the final seconds, that gave Rider a 73-72 victory over Cal State Northridge on Saturday at Northridge.

With the score 72-72, Thompson drove the lane and missed a shot but was fouled with six seconds to play. He made the front end of a one-and-one and missed the second.

Tony Osunsanmi of Northridge then grabbed the rebound and passed to Deon Tresvant, who hurried down the court but missed a 15-footer in the final second.

The game was part of ESPN’s Bracket Buster weekend.

Cal State Northridge managed to hold Rider star Jason Thompson to 11 points. Thompson, who averages 20.3 points, had attracted scouts from 12 NBA teams.

Rider (19-9) led virtually the entire game but couldn’t shake the Matadors (18-7), who played without their top three post players for most of the second half.

Northridge’s Jayme Miller fouled out with 12:57 left and Tremaine Townsend missed 11 minutes of the second half before he fouled out in the closing seconds. Forward Calvin Chitwood was out with an ankle injury.

Josh Jenkins led Northridge with 21 points and Tresvant added 18.

UC Riverside 79, Hawaii 62 -- Larry Cunningham became the Highlanders’ all-time leading scorer with a 31-point performance at Riverside.

Cunningham went 10 for 15 from the field, three of six from three-point range and eight for eight from the free-throw line to bring his career total to 1,390 points.

He passed previous leader Howard Lee, who scored 1,386 points for Riverside from 1969 to 1972.

Cal State Fullerton 85, Portland State 69 -- Josh Akognon scored 26 points and Frank Robinson had 20 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Titans past the Vikings at Fullerton.

The Titans (18-7) have won four in a row and eight of nine. Deonte Huff scored 17 points for the Vikings (18-9), whose nine-game winning streak ended.

New Mexico State 80, Long Beach State 48 -- Herb Pope scored 14 points and Justin Hawkins added 13 at Las Cruces, N.M., as the Aggies (16-12) increased their winning streak to five games.

Pope, a freshman, was six of 10 from the field for the Aggies, while Hawkins grabbed 10 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season.

Cornel Williams scored 10 points to lead the 49ers (6-20), who lost their third in a row. Donovan Morris, who entered the game averaging 21.3 points for the 49ers, was held to nine.

Fresno State 76, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 70 -- Eddie Miller scored 25 points and Kevin Bell added 19 points to lead the host Bulldogs (13-15) over the Mustangs (10-15).

Miller’s three-point basket with 2:28 left, his sixth of the game, put Fresno State ahead for good. Lorenzo Keeler had 21 points for the Mustangs.

Pepperdine 72, Loyola Marymount 63 -- Tyrone Shelley made seven of eight free throws during the final 2:30 to lead the Waves (10-18, 4-8 West Coast Conference) past the Lions (5-23, 2-10) at Loyola’s Gersten Pavilion. Orlando Johnson, Loyola’s leading scorer, missed all nine of his shots and went scoreless for the first time this season.

WOMEN

Oregon 66, UCLA 55 -- Kaela Chapdelaine scored 17 of her career-high 25 points during the final 12:42 at Eugene, Ore., after the Ducks (12-16, 6-11 Pac-10) lost their seven-point halftime lead and were trailing, 36-32.

The win kept Oregon from setting a school record for losses in a season and gave the Ducks their second win in 10 games.

Lindsey Pluimer led UCLA (14-13, 9-7) with 15 points.
