This season, cold weather gear is being sculpted into sexy, cinched shapes that will keep in the warmth while still showing off the power Pilates sessions suffered each week.
Leave it to a French label, Moncler, to nail the city slicker-on-the-mountain aesthetic. Though the company has been around for 56 years, it’s having a resurgence right now, particularly among the Hollywood crowd. Moncler’s cloud-like down jackets with the distinctive glossy sheen are a favorite with celebrities, turning up on Fergie, Lindsay Lohan and anyone who wants to channel that Victoria Beckham diva thing. Think of it as the cold-weather equivalent of the bandage dress.
Other brands have followed along and tightened up. Free Country makes particularly appealing winter wear that’s sleek and luxe. The metallic colors on the nipped-in jackets stand out among a sea of drab snow coats, and the cropped hip length is flattering with a pair of thick leggings.
Tecnica, the originator of the Moon Boot, is making a new shearling version with a colorful zigzag pattern on the back. They are playful, stylish, waterproof and a fresh alternative to the ubiquitous Ugg. They are certainly an extreme silhouette, but the boot fits right into the ‘70s trend happening right now and into spring.
Another ‘70s flashback: a simple turtleneck, hippy-fied with a leather vest with an exaggerated fur collar. Just remember, when wearing a bulkier piece, pair it with something fitted for a sleek look that won’t leave you frozen.
