A Bangladeshi court formally charged former Prime Minister Sheik Hasina Wajed with extortion after weeks of checking prosecution evidence.
Court officials said her trial would begin Jan. 17 with witnesses to be cross-examined by attorneys for the state and the defendants, and a verdict would be handed down within 60 days.
Wajed, her cousin and former minister Sheik Selim, and Wajed’s sister, Sheik Rehana, are accused of illegally taking about $440,000 from a businessman when Wajed was in power. Wajed denied the charges.
