None other than Neutra

Times Staff Writer

This was the first Richard Neutra-designed house to be photographed by Julius Shulman.

Shulman’s shots of the 1936 house in progress so impressed Neutra that he hired the novice to record more of his projects and eventually introduced him to other Modernists.

The fortuitous pairing helped put Shulman, now 97 and a recognized architectural photographer, on the road to fame.

The dramatic hillside house, designed for a journalist, is called the Josef Kun Residence. It was modeled after Neutra’s earlier Modernist-style Lovell House, which used steel-frame construction.
