A search team on Tuesday rescued a hiker who became disoriented when bad weather set in during a weekend hike high in the Mount Baldy area of the San Gabriel Mountains.
“Glad to be off the mountain,” Nathan Freund, 27, told KABC-TV after being brought to a command post.
He thanked the rescuers who were “brave enough and risked their own lives to come and get me.”
The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said the Camarillo man was unhurt and did not require any medical attention.
Freund had cellphone contact and also activated a personal locating transmitter, which a helicopter crew detected.
A ground team had to hike for hours to reach Freund, who said he was told to stay put.
Freund was able to send a cellphone message to his family to say he was lost.
