Once again, Bruins fans have a reason to thank Jeff Fisher.

In 1980, Fisher tips the ball into the waiting hands of Freeman McNeil, who takes it to the house for the winning touchdown.

Fast forward to 2008 and Tennessee Titans Coach Jeff Fisher fires Norm Chow, delivering him into the waiting arms of Rick Neuheisel and the UCLA Bruins.

Until Rick Neuheisel gets it done on the field instead of in Bill Plaschke’s dreams (Jan. 23), his efforts to turn UCLA into USC Lite will ultimately fail.

Prized recruits such as Mater Dei quarterback Matt Barkley (who committed to USC after the article appeared) will continue to ask, “If the recently fired Norm Chow and the other ex-USC assistants hired by UCLA are that good, wouldn’t they still be at nationally ranked USC?”

Bill Plaschke is as giddy as a schoolgirl now that UCLA has assembled the “Dream Team” of college coaching and has turned the program around. I’m all for optimism, but isn’t the flip side that these guys may be damaged goods and haven’t actually won a game together?

The Lakers thought they had put together a dream team with Karl Malone and Gary Payton in 2004 and we know how that turned out.
