Consider it a manual for the makeup junkie.

The newly launched On Makeup Magazine is now available for free at select makeup studios and online. But don’t expect the typical glossy cover. Solid-color covers distinguish it from the competition -- with all the gotta-see images inside.

“We have designed the magazine to be user-friendly for everyone -- from hard-core pros to the woman who just happens to love makeup,” says publisher Michael DeVellis.

The first issue includes an article about TV’s “Ugly Betty” and interviews with two of the makeup artists who work on the show. There’s also a photo spread covering the burlesque scene in L.A., featuring performers from Lucha Va Voom and the Velvet Hammer with an eye toward their makeup, of course.

The regular “what’s in their makeup kit” feature taps Ve Neill (“Pirates of the Caribbean” and “Sweeney Todd”) and Sharon Gault (fashion photographer David LaChapelle’s main artist and muse).

The magazine was started by the New York-based Powder Group, which was founded by DeVellis, a former executive at MAC Cosmetics. Powder is a consortium of professional makeup artists including Billy B, Justen Brosnan, Kelly Gleason and Alison Raffaele Tatem. If you haven’t heard of them, perhaps On Makeup will change that. DeVellis plans to draw upon their expertise, as well as that of local artists such as Maurice Stein, owner of Cinema Secrets.

For information, go to www.onmake upmagazine.com. The magazine, $9 after the first complimentary issue, is also available at Cinema Secrets in Burbank, Frends Beauty Supply Co. in North Hollywood and the Beauty Closet in Studio City.
