Gilmore to run for Warner seat

From Times Wire Reports

Former Gov. Jim Gilmore was narrowly nominated by the Virginia Republican Convention to run for the seat of retiring Republican U.S. Sen. John W. Warner.

Gilmore won with 50.3% of the delegate votes over state lawmaker Bob Marshall, the Virginia General Assembly’s most ardent foe of abortion and gay marriage.

The slim margin -- about 65 votes, less than a percentage point -- leaves Gilmore to face popular, well-funded Democrat Mark Warner in the fall election. The GOP has lost the state’s last two gubernatorial races and the 2006 Senate election.

Marshall conceded defeat and joined Gilmore briefly onstage to call for a GOP victory over Warner, but did not endorse Gilmore or mention his name.
