Sprinter Pettigrew gives up gold medal from Sydney

Antonio Pettigrew gave up his Olympic gold medal Tuesday, two weeks after the sprinter admitted in court that he cheated to win at Sydney in 2000.

During last month’s trial involving former track coach Trevor Graham, Pettigrew came clean about using banned substances EPO and human growth hormone from 1997 to 2003.

Graham, his one-time coach, was found guilty of lying to federal investigators about his relationship to a steroids dealer.

Pettigrew’s decision to give up the gold for the 1,600-meter relay was expected, and it came only a day after one of his teammates, Michael Johnson, also said he was giving back his relay medal in response to what Pettigrew had admitted.

Packers running back Herron stops burglar

Packers running back Noah Herron thwarted a would-be burglar at his suburban Green Bay, Wis., home by hitting him with a bed post during a break-in.

Brown County Sheriff Dennis Kocken said the break-in occurred late Friday and the injured intruder remained hospitalized but is expected to recover.

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said wide receiver Terry Glenn failed a physical after last season and still hasn’t passed it because of problems with the right knee that was operated on twice last season.

Jones wants Glenn to agree to accept a $500,000 injury settlement if he can’t play this season. “I paid him $5 million last year and we got four plays,” Jones said.

Ducks’ AHL team to be based in Iowa

Fulfilling their wish to move their minor-league teams closer to Anaheim, the Ducks announced a two-year American Hockey League affiliate agreement with Des Moines, Iowa.

The Ducks had their AHL team based in Portland, Maine, for the last three years.

Arizona State wins college softball title

Katie Burkhart threw a four-hitter, Kaitlin Cochran hit a three-run home run and Arizona State claimed its first women’s College World Series title with an 11-0 victory over Texas A&M; at Oklahoma City.

Brian Keith Patch, a 36-year-old skateboarder who has starred at the X Games, will be arraigned today on a charge of having sex with a 15-year-old girl.

He was charged with one felony count of lewd acts with a child, Orange County district attorney’s office spokeswoman Farrah Emami said.

Slamball, the sport that blends basketball, football and gymnastics, will return to California starting this weekend with a series of afternoon and evening demonstration games at Universal Citywalk.

Games will be staged daily at 2 and 7 p.m. from Saturday to June 14 -- with the exception of Tuesday, when no games are scheduled. Admission is free.
