PHILADELPHIA -- Edinson Volquez had no room for error, so he didn’t make any mistakes.

Joey Votto’s two-out RBI double in the seventh inning spoiled Brett Myers’ bid for a no-hitter, and the Cincinnati Reds beat the Philadelphia Phillies, 2-0, Wednesday night behind another impressive start by Volquez.

“I can’t say enough about him,” Votto said. “He was great. He took care of us.”

Myers retired the first 13 batters before he walked Adam Dunn with one out in the fifth. He gave up one run, one hit and walked a season-high six in 7 1/3 innings, striking out eight.

A crowd hoping to see Ken Griffey Jr. hit his 600th homer saw a pitcher’s duel in the rarest of places -- hitter-friendly Citizens Bank Park.

Griffey wasn’t in the Reds’ lineup for the third consecutive game because of general soreness, including a sore left knee. For the second straight game, he walked as a pinch-hitter in the eighth and pitcher Bronson Arroyo ran for him.

Volquez (8-2) gave up two hits, struck out eight, walked two and hit two batters in seven innings, lowering his earned-run average to a major league best 1.32.
