Broad is made a life trustee

Four months after the $56-million Broad Contemporary Art Museum opened at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Eli Broad -- the billionaire art collector who bankrolled the new building -- has been appointed a life trustee at LACMA.

The honorary designation, bestowed Wednesday at the museum’s board of trustees meeting, puts Broad in a league with other major donors, visionary leaders and former board chairs, but ends his 13-year tenure as a working trustee with voting rights.

Broad was traveling and unavailable for comment. In a statement released by the museum, he praised its leadership and said: “I am looking forward to continuing and increasing our family’s long-standing support of LACMA and the Broad Art Foundation’s partnership with LACMA and BCAM.”

In the course of Broad’s trusteeship, he and wife Edythe have given the museum nearly $70 million in building and art acquisition funds and donated works.
