Broadcom buys Sunext Design

Chip maker Broadcom Corp. bought Sunext Design Inc. for as much as $48 million in cash to add technology used in Blu-ray DVD players.
Irvine-based Broadcom is spending more to make chips for the Blu-ray standard after the technology, backed by Sony Corp., became the dominant form of high-definition video with the departure of Toshiba Corp.’s HD DVD last month.
