Former Croatian Gen. Ante Gotovina went on trial at the war crimes tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, charged with driving as many as 200,000 Serbs from a rebel enclave in a military offensive that made him a hero in his homeland.
Gotovina and fellow Gens. Ivan Cermak and Mladen Markac are accused at The Hague tribunal of orchestrating the killing of hundreds of people and the shelling and burning of towns and villages as Croatian forces retook the Serb-controlled Krajina region in 1995.
