Campbell Hall led by McBroom’s 30

SACRAMENTO -- With All-American guard Jrue Holiday stuck on the bench because of foul trouble Friday, freshman point guard Austin McBroom showed why North Hollywood Campbell Hall fans are confident its boys’ basketball team’s winning ways aren’t about to end after Holiday moves on to UCLA next season.

“You saw a passing of the torch today,” Coach Terry Kelly said after 5-foot-10 McBroom scored a career-high 30 points to help the Vikings defeat Albany St. Mary’s, 83-61, and win the state Division IV championship at Arco Arena.

McBroom ignited a 9-0 run at the end of the second quarter with his drives to the basket. Campbell Hall (31-5) turned a 14-point halftime lead into a 29-point advantage at the end of the third quarter on the way to winning its third state title in the last four years.

“The way Austin stepped up was unbelievable,” said Holiday, who finished with 19 points, giving him 2,666 points in his career.

Holiday picked up his third foul midway through the second quarter. It was up to McBroom and Dallas Rutherford, who finished with 20 points, to keep the Vikings from going into panic mode.

By the third quarter, with Holiday back on the court, the Vikings took off. They ran at will, they blocked shots and they made shots. They finished the game making 30 of 61 shots, a rarity in an arena setting, where high school teams routinely don’t shoot well.

But McBroom, 15, was the coolest player of all. He made 10 of 16 shots and demonstrated consistent court leadership. His previous career high was 14 points.

“The team is his now,” Holiday said.

St. Mary’s finished 33-2.

San Jose Mitty 59, Manhattan Beach Mira Costa 49 (OT) -- There were plenty of emotions flowing through the locker room of the Mira Costa girls’ basketball team after its loss in the Division II title game.

Mikah Maly-Karros, the team’s leading scorer, was upset that she picked up three fouls in the third quarter and then fouled out in the fourth. Left to fend without her, the Mustangs saw Mitty rally from a double-digit first-half deficit.

“I’m not happy at all that we lost,” said Maly-Karros, who became the Southern Section’s all-time rebounding leader this season. “That’s a team we could’ve beat.”

Tears flowed down the cheeks of Megan Richardson, who missed one of two free throws with 24.8 seconds left, allowing the game to reach overtime.

“If I would have hit that free throw, we wouldn’t be sitting here upset,” said Richardson, whose three-point basket with a minute left drew the Mustangs to within a point.

Richardson finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds and Maly-Karros scored 20 points, including nine in the fourth quarter before fouling out with 2:19 left. It was the fourth consecutive overtime game for the Mustangs (28-7).

Lindsay Leo scored 17 points to lead Mitty (22-11), which rallied in the second half of last year’s Division II final to defeat Brea Olinda.

Vallejo St. Patrick/St. Vincent 67, La Jolla Country Day 65 -- La Jolla Country Day (26-6) let an 11-point lead slip away in the fourth quarter of the girls’ Division IV title game, then failed to capitalize on two scoring opportunities down the stretch.

Dominique Conners, a San Diego-bound guard, missed two free throws in the final minute and Janae Fulcher, an Arizona State-bound forward, grabbed the offensive rebound but missed the layup.

Fulcher finished with a game-high 23 points and Conners had 21.

St. Patrick/St. Vincent finished 28-5.
