Affirmative action ban upheld
A federal judge in Lansing dismissed a lawsuit that challenged a state law banning racial and gender preferences in government hiring and public university admissions.
The ruling upholds the constitutionality of a measure approved by voters in 2006. It had been challenged by several groups, including the American Civil Liberties Union and the National Assn. for the Advancement of Colored People.
“It’s about time the people of Michigan’s voices were heard,” said Jennifer Gratz, who led the Michigan Civil Rights Initiative. The measure passed with 58% of the vote.
