Firms to help fund Stanford lab

Six high-tech firms are joining an industrywide effort to create software to take advantage of the latest microprocessors. Intel Corp., Advanced Micro Devices Inc., IBM Corp., Hewlett-Packard Co., Sun Microsystems Inc. and Nvidia Corp. are sponsoring the Pervasive Parallelism Lab at Stanford University.
The latest graphics and general-purpose processors have multiple cores, or miniature processors, that can be effective only if the software they are running has been written to exploit those capabilities. The Stanford lab will have a budget of $6 million over three years.
